How does key cutting work?

Key cutting is a method which allows duplicate keys to be made from an original one. It makes life easier for many people who share houses, or have offices and buildings that they have access to. It is convenient as it doesn’t require just one person to be responsible for opening up a business, or have one person at the house or flat you live in to have to wait for the key holder to return to let them in.

There are various types of key cuts that that can be created, for example:

-          Household mortice key

-          Household cylinder key

-          First level security key

-          Car keys

-          Caravan keys

-          New car keys with an electronic chips

-          Keys cut by number

-          Safe keys

-          Tubular keys

-          Patio double glazing keys

-          Window lock keys

-          Motorbike keys

Key cutting is a relatively simple process, but does require some practice as it can be complicated to get the procedure right, so that the blank key is an exact replica of the original key. If it is not a good replica, it will be of no use to anyone. There are 6 vital parts to a key cutting machine, it consists of:

-          An electronic motor

-          A cutting wheel

-          A vice to hold the key blank

-          A guide

-          A key alignment device

These are the main components of the key cutting machine, and if used correctly it can be useful in providing you with a high quality duplicate key, which can then be used straight away.

So how does a key cutting machine work?

The original key is inserted into a vice which is situated near the guide, the blank key is inserted in another vice which is placed near the cutting wheel.  The alignment device within the machine is then positioned horizontally across both the blank key, and the original key.  Once the motor is started it spins the cutting wheel and the guide. As the operator traces the guide along the cuts and outlines of the original key, the blank key is dragged along the cutting wheel. This is how the key is cut.  Once all the cuts have been clearly defined on the blank key, it is removed and buffed on a grinding machine. The overall finish should be a shiny new key, which matches the original one.
